Douglas Smith is director, producer, visual effects supervisor, director of photography, and one of visual effects leading creative talents. He is an Academy Award “Oscar” recipient and a recipient of Asia’s highest honor, the Golden Horse Award, both for Visual Effects. He is an Executive Producer on “The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu” that was just released in April 2023. Most recently Douglas co-founded Mixel Media, a creative production management group and project funding source.  

In the last 6 years Douglas helped establish Myth Images Beijing and Los Angeles. For Myth Images Douglas was the senior VFX Supervisor and head of the Los Angeles office on “Feng Shen” trilogy, directed by Wuershan. The first installment will be released in summer 2023.  More recently Douglas has been consulting on “The Outcast” a Tencent live action production based on the anime of the same name with a fall of 2023 release date.  

Just prior to Myth Images Douglas received the Golden Horse Award for work on “Mojin: The Lost Legend” also known as, “Xe Long Juia”, one of the leading box office films in China.  He received the Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for his work on “Independence Day”. Douglas was one of the key individuals at Rhythm and Hues Studios for 15 years, known for leading edge VFX and creature work.

The first feature film Douglas worked on was the original “Star Wars: A New Hope.”  He then became a co-owner of Apogee Productions, working as cameraman, head of the camera department and evolving into VFX Supervisor.  “Battlestar Galactica”, “Caddyshack”, “Spaceballs”, James Bond “Never Say Never Again”, “The Natural” are among the Apogee projects.

Douglas is currently a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Directors Guild of America and the Visual Effects Society. Douglas was a long time member of Local 600, Int’l Cinematographers Guild as a Director of Photography.

Born in California, Douglas is a self-described “military brat” who was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as Morocco and Puerto Rico as a child.  Douglas currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
